These Exhibition at the South African Museum, one of the oldest museum in Africa, established in 1825, was finally shut down in 2001 after being on display since 1960 due to public outcry on the portrayal of the San people in a negative way. President Nelson Mandela during Heritage Day in South Africa in 1997, commented that most museums in South Africa represented the kind of heritage that glorified mainly white and colonial history and deplored the depiction of African people as lesser beings in some natural history museums. This was regarded as a direct reference to the Bushman Diorama at the South African Museum(SAM)
